On Saturday morning all the stalls would open on the outdoor market, one
stall in particular was known as Leylands stall they sold eggs and bacon
without the ration card, but each person was only allowed six eggs and a
pound of bacon, mum had the bright idea she would be in the queue and I would
be six paces behind her with my own basket and of course get double the amount,
this was OK till I got to the counter when a women shouted ‘that’s his mother
just been served’, mum who was stood a few feet a way shouted back
‘I’m not his mother, I don’t know him’, anyway I got the eggs and bacon but
we couldn’t pull that trick again.
