The air raids were coming more often now, as we lived halfway between Liverpool and Manchester
I could look out of my bedroom window at the back of the house and see a bright red glow
above Manchester and at the front we could see the same over Liverpool, the bombers
would pass over our town on the way to Manchester. We did not have many bombs in the town
but we were surrounded by anti-aircraft guns and searchlight batteries, one advantage
of having a paper round in the early morning is that I was able to collect shrapnel that
was scattered around the town where shells had bursted and shrapnel dropped to the ground,
everyone at school would collect shrapnel, I had a big box full.
